Major international interest in the event

The 5th PCIC-Europe (Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee) conference took place this year in Weimar. From 10-12 June 2008 almost 200 international specialists met in the cultural German city to obtain information on actual topics related to safety engineering in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries. There was also ample opportunity for catching up with contacts and making new contacts. As a leading provider of explosion protected electrical products and system solutions, R. STAHL was, as during the previous conferences in Basel, Amsterdam and Paris - actively involved in organising and running the event. As a result the company has made a major contribution to the successful establishment of the event.

During the three days of the conference, well-known speakers reported on, among other aspects, the latest developments in the standardisation area, innovations in the area of automation and lighting technology, maintenance and repair of explosion-protected equipment and their experience from practice. Juergen Poidl, product manager for switchgear at R. STAHL, impressed the audience with his paper on frequency converters and centrifuges for potentially explosive atmospheres. However, subjects from outside Europe, e.g. techniques for bituminous sand pumping in Canada, also generated considerable interest.

The breadth of participants continued to increase compared to the initial conferences. As a result is was possible to welcome test centres, manufacturers and users of plant in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries from almost all the countries in the EU. A significant number of participants also came from the USA and Canada. The reputation of the conference has even spread as far as Malaysia and
Brazil and drew guests to Weimar. The exchange of experiences between these participants is intended
to support and promote the maintenance and improvement of safety in plant.

In the evening, Dr. Thorsten Arnhold, Vice President Product Management and Marketing at R. STAHL and Chairman of the local preparation committee, invited all to the festive part of the conference. As a result of the perfectly organised evening programme, the participants were able to gain a feel for the charm of the cultural city of Weimar and obviously had a very pleasant time. Constructive conversations, the exchange of information and experience as well as the strengthening of contacts were the outcome. As a result Arnhold was also very satisfied with how the conference went. "The number of participants, the quality of the papers and the relaxed atmosphere have demonstrated that the PCIC conference is now an established event in Europe".
